"Up to six months" - South African forward out of action for extended break after neck injury

The injury has already had immediate consequences for the Stormers’ ambitions in Europe, with the 28-year-old flanker de-registered from their Investec Champions Cup squad. Lock Alex Groves has been brought into John Dobson's side as his replacement, as the franchise reshapes its options with two weeks remaining in the pool stage ahead of the knockout rounds.

Ackermann’s absence adds to a growing injury list within the Stormers pack. Loosehead prop Ali Vermaak has also been removed from the Champions Cup squad after sustaining an ankle injury during last weekend’s Vodacom URC clash against the Bulls. The front-rower is now facing a period on the sidelines, further stretching the Stormers’ depth up front.

The Stormers wellness check does not end there, as the Cape Town side is still navigating the injuries to centre Dan du Plessis and prop Corne Weilbach, who have both been ruled out of the following fortnight block of Champions Cup fixtures. The Stormers head to South West London this week, as they take on a Harlequins side that is in dire need of a form-finding win. Following that, the Stormers return home to South Africa and play hosts to Leicester Tigers, in what will be a blockbuster match-up to close out their respective pool stage efforts.

The Stormers have bolstered their ranks with a trio of fresh faces ahead of the trip to London, with versatile back Luke Burger, former sevens star Mfundo Ndhlovu and breakthrough back row Wandi Mlaba all signed on for Champions Cup duties.
