Leinster stalwart Luke McGrath moves to Top 14 side

McGrath made his senior debut for Leinster in May 2012 against the Newport Gwent Dragons and had previously represented Ireland at underage level. Two years later, in May 2014, he secured a contract with the senior squad after progressing through the academy. In January 2024, he marked his 200th appearance for the province in a 43–7 win over Stade Français at the Aviva Stadium.

Across 248 appearances, he scored 56 tries, placing him fifth on Leinster’s all-time try-scoring list. His most recent try came in Saturday’s narrow 8–7 United Rugby Championship defeat to Cardiff, a result that brought an end to the team’s 11-match winning streak.

Reports in recent weeks indicated that McGrath had been in discussions with the Top 14 side, who were also believed to have contacted South Africa’s two-time World Cup winner Faf de Klerk.

He has agreed to a one-year contract with the option of a further season.

During his time at Leinster, McGrath won a Champions Cup and seven URC titles (formerly the Pro12/Pro14). In April 2017, he was voted Leinster Players’ Player of the Year.

Perpignan currently sit 13th in the Top 14 standings but have already strengthened significantly ahead of next season, including the signing of All Black Sevu Reece.
