Finn Russell fires back at Lions coach Johnny Sexton following criticism

Scotland fly-half Finn Russell has insisted he doesn't "hold a grudge" against Johnny Sexton, despite the personal remarks made by the Irish legend during the British & Irish Lions tour.

Speaking exclusively to Scotland Rugby News ahead of Bath’s Gallagher Premiership final triumph over Leicester Tigers, Russell addressed the long-rumoured tension between the pair for the first time.
Sexton, who was part of the Lions coaching group, had made critical comments about Russell, sparking speculation of a strained reunion when the squad assembled in London. However, Russell was quick to dismiss any lingering resentment.
“As a player you are very competitive to win but myself and Johnny were competing for places on the Lions tour of four years ago and the one before that too so there was competition for the jersey, a lot of competition between us, when we played,” said the Scottish playmaker, who was a star performer as Bath won the Premiership this weekend.
“You'll do anything you can on the pitch to try and win and try and get one up on the other person. Now that Johnny has retired there is no competition there.
“I’m still playing, and even if he was still playing there wouldn’t be an issue at all."
Russell stressed that representing the Lions comes with a unique mindset.
“That’s because with the Lions you have to put all the other stuff to the side and get on with each other.
“Johnny and myself are with the Lions to do our best for the team, each other and ourselves in our roles and to build relationships."
And despite their history, Russell revealed the pair were able to share a laugh once they’d cleared the air.
“After we met up and talked we ended up having a laugh about the whole thing. I certainly don’t bear a grudge against him and we move on.”
