Disgraced former Scotland star plays for the USA against England

The 25-year-old winger, who earned three caps for Scotland before his career was derailed, has been named in the USA Eagles squad and could line up against his old side this November in Edinburgh.

McLean was booted out by Glasgow Warriors in January 2023 after admitting to “aggressive” and “controlling” behaviour towards his ex-partner. A court heard how the Boston-born flyer pushed her, shouted abuse, and stalked her during a two-year relationship. He was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and slapped with a 10-year non-harassment order.

Following his sacking, McLean moved Stateside and linked up with the American Raptors before signing for MLR outfit Houston SaberCats.

Eligible for the USA through birth, McLean made his debut in their summer series and started against England in Washington FC.

Now, under World Rugby’s three-year stand-down rule, he’s officially switched allegiance and could face his former teammates at his old home ground.

His last appearance for Scotland came against Argentina in July 2022.
