"A moron" - Joe Marler's wife furious with celebrity traitor for 'vile' comment

The veteran front-rower was suspended for six weeks (with four suspended) after calling an opponent’s mother a “whore” during a fiery Premiership clash. The target of Marler’s outburst was Bristol Bears flanker Jake Heenan, whose mother—unbeknownst to Marler at the time—was battling cancer in hospital.
The comment caused an immediate backlash across the rugby community, with fans, pundits, and players alike condemning the remark.
Marler, capped more than 80 times by England and a 2017 British & Irish Lion, later addressed the incident on his podcast Things People Do. He issued a heartfelt apology to Heenan, his teammates, and Harlequins supporters, admitting:
“I’ve f***ed it all up again. I’m really sorry to Jake Heenan and his family… and to my club and teammates who must be thinking, ‘here we go again’.”
But perhaps the most stinging reaction came not from rugby fans—but from his wife, Daisy.
Marler often credits Daisy, his childhood sweetheart, as the grounding force in his life. The couple share four children together and live a quieter family life away from the spotlight when he’s not in camp with Harlequins or England.
On the podcast, Marler revealed that Daisy didn’t hold back when she found out about his latest outburst:
“She turned round to me and went, ‘fing hell, you’re an idiot, aren’t you? You’re just a moron.’

Marler added that once Daisy learned about Heenan’s mother’s situation, her disappointment deepened:
“She went, ‘f***ing hell, Joe. You couldn’t have picked something worse. Why don’t you just stop doing it? Or, if you have to have a bit of chat, don’t drag family into it.’”
The 34-year-old prop described feeling “like a naughty schoolboy” being scolded by his wife. It’s not the first time Daisy has had to reel him back in—Marler has spoken openly about his mental health battles and how Daisy’s support helped him rebuild his career and keep perspective off the pitch.
Her latest tough-love response, Marler admitted, hit home:
“You never know what’s going on in people’s lives,” he reflected. “Just because it doesn’t affect you doesn’t mean it’s not hurting someone else.”
Despite the controversy, Marler remains a fan favourite—equal parts maverick and mentor—and it seems Daisy’s no-nonsense honesty continues to be the prop’s best defence against himself.
