Gatland's Gate | 6 other wonderful things named in honour of rugby stars

The main vehicle entrance to the stadium - Gate 4 - will now be known as "Gatland's Gate".null

Rugby stars are celebrated across the world for their achievements, and the ways they are honoured are becoming more interesting.

Here are six of our favourites.

The winger, one of the greatest rugby players ever to grace the game has a street named after him, the location of which is a few metres from where he grew up as a schoolboy. He had a popular series of games named after him in the late 90's.

Following the 2015 Rugby World Cup, a zoo in Hamamatsu opted to name their newly-born giraffe after the Japan star. Reports in the Japan Times say a male baby giraffe born in September at Hamamatsu Zoological Gardens will carry the name 'Goromaru' after visitors chose that over three other sporting stars.

Popular rugby referee Nigel Owens has had an Italian Beer called “Rug Birra Nigel” named after him.

The Doddie Weir Cup was established as a perpetual rugby union trophy between Scotland and Wales in 2018. The cup was created to bring awareness to Motor Neurone Disease. Former Scotland international lock Weir was diagnosed with illness and the cup was named in his honour. Wales are the current holders.

The centre has a Clifton Sausage dish named after him in aid of the Bath Rugby Foundation in 2017.

The 10 six-week-old Boxer-cross dogs - made up of Johnno, Tindall, Ashton, Flood, Wilko, Foden, Easter, Sheridan, Hartley and Haskell - were taken to a Blue Cross centre in Kimpton in 2011 after their mother was killed when she was hit by a car. They all found homes!
