When you're a rugby player, you realize that rugby tends to have its own "culture."
Everyone knows you as someone who plays, and you've just accepted this by now.
So, to express my love for the sport, here are 10 signs that are all too familiar when you play rugby.
1. Saturday’s are always a total write off
Whether you're playing, or sitting in front of the TV watching a game, when there’s rugby on you know you’re unlikely to be doing anything else.
2. Results will dictate your plans
After a defeat you’re unlikely to want to leave the house, whilst if you win you’ll be in for a great night.
3. You look like someone beat you up, but really they're just game day bruises
You swear you’re not in an abusive relationship, you just happen to play rugby where protection doesn’t exist.
4. Mud doesn’t really bother you anymore
It ends up in the strangest of places so you learn to live with it.
5. You may be opponents on the pitch, but you're friends off it
For 80 minutes you may want to rip each others heads off, but once those 80 minutes are up, you shake hands and go socialize. Why? Because this is rugby.
6. You own stock in pre-wrap, med-tape and IcyHot.
7. Your car has got stuck on a field more than once
8. When you'r asked if that's blood, you find any excuse to say it's not
No, Sir, that’s not blood. I’m fine. It's just...ketchup... You don’t want to be taken out of the game, and you find any excuse to stay in.
9. You're always singing your team's song, chant or rugby songs
Every team has them…and I’m sure you’re silently singing one to yourself as you read this.
10. Sir And Ma’am
Being respectful is taught to all Rugby players. It doesn’t matter whom they’re speaking to. It could either be the flower lady, the milkman, or your parents.null
11. You’re on first name terms with A&E staff
Whether you’ve ruptured your quad, been at the bottom of a collapsed scrum or broken your ankle, chances are everyone at A&E now knows your name.
12. Nothing is off limits on the group chat...
Everything is discussed on the squad chat, from speculating on the origins of your bruised nipple to discussing someone’s new pet hedgehog, back to vetoing Tinder matches.
13. Rugby Jargon
Not only are you now filled with endless rugby terms – grubber, up and under, maul, openside etc. – but you also learn all the weird calls your hooker and scrum-half will give. On top of this you’ve got to yell everything with a mouthguard.
14. Drinking beer isn’t an optional recreation – it’s the third half of the game
15. Blue, green, and purple become your accent colours
“No, I swear I’m not being hurt at home” you say to the well meaning lady at the bus stop, “I play rugby, it’s fine.”
16. Stash addiction is a real thing
You have multiple hoodies all in large sizes around the house.
17. Sunday’s recovery day
The whole day is spent nursing a hangover and your bruises.
18.Your team is your family.
The bond that you create with your team is like no other. Your friends on and off the pitch, and are nothing short of a family.
