Scarlets 35-22 Leinster: Shock of the season contender as Scarlets upset URC league leaders

It was a sunny evening in Llanelli as the Scarlets welcomed Leinster to Parc y Scarlets. It was a must-win encounter for the Welsh side as the race for eighth intensified. Leinster had one eye on their upcoming Champions Cup final against Northampton and travelled to West Wales with a somewhat depleted side. The weather provided pitch-perfect conditions for a great game of rugby.

The contest had all the makings of an electrifying match, with both sides looking to play expansive rugby. It was a vital clash that could have a big impact on the playoff picture.

The match burst into life from the opening whistle, with both teams intent on attacking. The Scarlets made early progress and earned a penalty within striking distance, but Sam Costelow missed the opportunity.

Moments later, Taine Plumtree sliced through the Leinster defence and linked up with Gareth Davies, who crossed for the opening try to give the hosts a 7–0 lead. Sparked by a turnover on halfway, the Scarlets worked into range, and this time Costelow converted a penalty to make it 10–0.

Leinster soon responded, as an early tackle allowed Ross Byrne to get them on the scoreboard with a straightforward penalty. The Scarlets continued to dominate possession, and their patience paid off. After working through the phases, Costelow sent a beautifully weighted cross-kick to Tom Rogers, who dove over in the corner to extend the lead to 15–3.

Leinster answered immediately, charging down the restart and applying pressure. Jamie Osborne led the fightback, going over to narrow the gap to 15–10.

Following a bruising exchange, Plumtree intercepted a loose pass and sprinted clear to score under the posts, restoring a two-score advantage at 22–10. Leinster kept pressing, and just before the break, they found another try to bring the score to 22–15 at half-time.

The Scarlets picked up where they left off as the second half got underway. Blair Murray cut a sharp line to put Joe Roberts in for the bonus-point try, stretching the lead to 29–15.

Soon after, a late tackle by Plumtree gifted Leinster an attacking platform. The visitors remained composed, and James Culhane crashed over to bring the Irish side back into it at 29–22.

Ioan Lloyd, continuing his fine season, knocked over a penalty to push the margin to ten points. A clever kick from Roberts found space behind, and Plumtree, showing deft footwork, kept the ball in play to earn another penalty.

Despite Leinster’s late push — including a huge defensive effort from Marnus van der Merwe — the Scarlets managed the game smartly and held their nerve. Lloyd added the final points of the evening from the tee to seal a memorable 35–22 win.
