Another Moana Pasifika player departs as Highlanders secure signing

The Australian-born Tonga international arrives with experience across the English Championship, Super Rugby and Test rugby, having established himself as one of Tonga's key playmakers in recent years.

Pellegrini joined Coventry Rugby in 2022 and quickly impressed with his game management, goal-kicking and attacking ability. His performances earned him a call-up to the Tongan national team, making his debut in 2023 before featuring prominently during Tonga's Rugby World Cup campaign in France later that year.

The 27-year-old moved to Moana Pasifika in 2025 and has made 16 appearances across the past two Super Rugby Pacific seasons.

Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph believes Pellegrini's arrival will strengthen the squad ahead of the 2027 campaign.

“Patrick is a smart, composed No.10 who has proven himself in some of the toughest club competitions in the world. He’s grown his game significantly over the past few seasons and shown he can perform at international level.

"We believe he’ll thrive in our environment and add real value to the group.”

Joseph said Pellegrini's signing adds further depth at first five-eighth for the Highlanders.

Pellegrini said he is looking forward to the opportunity of joining the club.
