Worcester Warriors sign another international star ahead of comeback

The 22-year-old flyer, a regular in his nation’s sevens setup, lit up last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, crossing for four tries in Uruguay’s three pool matches. A dynamic and elusive runner, Gonzalez brings serious firepower to Sixways as the club prepares for its return to professional rugby.

Gonzalez is no stranger to the 15-a-side game either. He made his Test debut for Los Teros against Spain in November, earning further caps against Japan and Romania. He’s expected to feature in Uruguay’s July fixtures, including a home clash with Romania and a trip to Argentina, before their crucial World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.

“Juan has a serious amount of exciting talent,” said Warriors head coach Matt Everard. “He’s got brilliant footwork and a tough edge to his game — a very exciting addition for us.”

The South American speedster joins a growing list of new arrivals at Sixways as Worcester gear up for life in the revamped 14-team Championship, nearly three years after financial turmoil forced the former Premiership outfit into administration.

Gonzalez follows hot on the heels of Leicester Tigers prop Tim Hoyt, ex-England U20 hooker Archie Vanes, Exeter loosehead Billy Keast, and Cornish Pirates back Will Trewin.

Veteran flanker Matt Kvesic was the first to return as the rebuild got underway. Since then, former Wales scrum-half Lloyd Williams, Saracens prop Fraser Balmain, and Dragons No.10 Will Reed have also put pen to paper as the Warriors begin to take shape under new boss Everard.
