Warren Gatland spotted in stands of Test match as rumours swirl

The New Zealander was surprisingly linked last week with the director of rugby role at Gallagher Premiership club Harlequins. The position would have marked his first step back into club rugby since departing the Chiefs in 2022 to begin his second stint in charge of Wales.

Gatland is understood to have confirmed that Harlequins made contact regarding a possible role at The Stoop. However, he ultimately decided against taking up the opportunity.

Despite the interest, he has chosen not to return to the week-to-week demands of the English top flight. Instead, he remains focused on his role with World Rugby, where he contributes to the development of high performance structures and coaching standards across the global game.

Those close to the 60-year-old suggest family considerations also influenced his choice, as he is keen to spend more time at home in New Zealand after many years working overseas.

Although a club comeback appears unlikely for now, the 62-year-old has sparked fresh talk about a return to the international arena. He was spotted on Sunday evening at the Rugby Europe Championship clash between Portugal and Romania.

Gatland attended the match at the Estadio Nacional Jamor, where Portugal secured a commanding 44–7 victory. His presence has prompted speculation that he could be weighing up a future role with Os Lobos, or perhaps even with Romania as they look ahead to next year’s Rugby World Cup.

Fellow New Zealander Simon Mannix currently leads Portugal. Mannix previously coached Biarritz Olympique in France’s Pro D2 and has also held positions with Pau, Munster and Racing Metro. He earned one Test cap for New Zealand against France in 1994.

There has been no official explanation for Gatland’s attendance at the fixture. However, since stepping down from Wales last February, he has made it clear that he is not finished with coaching and would welcome the chance to work with a side competing at a World Cup.
