Warren Gatland could be set for sensational coaching return

Bristol’s heavy defeat to Northampton Saints has increased pressure on Lam and left the club in serious danger of missing out on the Gallagher Prem play-offs once again.

Following his recent departure from the Wales national rugby union team, Gatland has been heavily linked with a return to club rugby and is understood to be one of the standout names available on the market.

The 62-year-old is one of the most decorated coaches in the modern game, having guided Wales to multiple Six Nations titles and enjoyed successful spells with Wasps RFC, British & Irish Lions and in international rugby.

According to reports from RugbyPass, Harlequins FC viewed Gatland as a leading candidate for their director of rugby role earlier this year before discussions broke down.

That has left Gatland available — and now tipped for a stunning return to coaching if Bristol opt to make a change this summer.

Lam has been in charge at Ashton Gate since 2017 and led Bristol back to the Premiership in 2018. But despite substantial investment and a squad packed with international talent, the Bears have reached the play-offs just three times in eight seasons.

Friday night’s collapse against Saints has intensified scrutiny over his position, although RUCK understands no immediate decision is expected, with Bristol’s hierarchy set to review matters at the end of the season.

Any move would be complicated by the fact Lam remains under contract until 2028, after signing a long-term extension in 2021.

Nevertheless, with another inconsistent campaign and supporter frustration growing, Gatland’s name is rapidly gathering momentum as Bristol weigh up their next move.
