Wallabies legend Matt Giteau has come out of retirement at the age of 41

The seasoned player has inked a deal with San Diego Legion, setting the stage for his participation in the 2024 Major League Rugby season.

This unexpected decision adds another chapter to Giteau's storied career, keeping fans eagerly anticipating his on-field prowess once again.

“We are over the moon to secure the services of Matt for the upcoming season," Danny Lee, Head Coach and Director Of Rugby at San Diego Legion said.

"To have a highly experienced, International player of Matt’s caliber join the Legion is something very exciting. 

"He is a world class player that will bring an incredible wealth of knowledge, competitive attitude and drive to succeed with him that will no doubt spread throughout the squad.

Giteau marked his Test debut a mere 48 days after celebrating his 20th birthday, stepping into the shoes of the current RA Chairman, Dan Herbert. This pivotal moment took place during their narrow 32-31 defeat against England at Twickenham in 2002.

His prowess was further evident at the Super Rugby level with the ACT Brumbies, where he clinched two Super Rugby premierships. Notably, his two seasons with the Western Force stand out as some of the club's most successful under the combined format.

The skilled playmaker's illustrious career includes an impressive tally of 103 Tests, ranking him 6th all-time for Australia as of the end of 2017. Moreover, his contribution to the team is highlighted by a scoring record of 698 points, securing his position as the 3rd highest scorer for Australia as of the end of 2017.

Giteau's winning pedigree extends across continents, boasting titles in Australia with the Brumbies, as well as triumphant stints in France with Toulon and in Japan with Suntory. His success has even reached the shores of the USA, adding another feather to his cap.
