Under-pressure England trio could lose central contracts to Farrell and Pollock

The RFU initially planned to award 21–24 contracts, but capped it at 17. That number could still rise, but assuming it stays locked, a shake-up looks likely — especially with three potential additions currently shining for the British & Irish Lions.

Pollock is a genuine star in the making. The 20-year-old flanker was one of the breakout performers in the Premiership this season, combining elite breakdown work with explosive carrying. His physicality and maturity have earned him a place on the Lions tour, and he looks destined for a long England career.

George Martin, while a Borthwick favourite, has struggled to stay fit — and Pollock’s rapid rise makes him a prime candidate to take over that back-row EPS slot.

He’s teased it — and based on his Lions form, he’s ready. Farrell may have taken a break from the England fold, but he’s still one of the most tactically astute players in the game. A veteran of 112 caps and a former captain, he offers leadership, grit, and unrivalled control under pressure.

Henry Slade, meanwhile, remains classy but hasn’t nailed down a consistent spot under Borthwick. With the midfield pecking order crowded, he could be the unlucky one if Farrell returns.

Cowan-Dickie is back — and looking more like his old self. Now with Sale Sharks and impressing on Lions duty, the 31-year-old brings powerful scrummaging, top-tier set-piece work, and huge physicality around the park. He’s experienced, proven, and a former British & Irish Lion.

Theo Dan, on the other hand, underwhelmed during England’s summer tour. Despite his raw power and future potential, his set-piece struggles — particularly at the lineout — have raised concerns. LCD’s return to full fitness may prove too hard to ignore.

If England stick with 17 EPS contracts, we’re backing Pollock, Farrell, and Cowan-Dickie to break in — with Martin, Slade, and Dan making way. Harsh calls? Maybe. But international rugby waits for no one.
