Tributes flood in as ex-Springbok star dies aged just 46

Former Springbok fullback and Northam Rhinos head coach Bevin Fortuin has tragically passed away after suffering a suspected heart attack ahead of a Rhinos training session, according to multiple reports.
Fortuin, capped twice by South Africa (against Ireland in 2006 and Australia during the 2007 Tri-Nations), was a respected figure both on and off the field. Following stints with the SWD Eagles and Free State Cheetahs, he transitioned into coaching, where he quickly built a reputation as a popular and inspirational leader. Most recently, he had been guiding the Northam Rhinos.
In a heartfelt statement, the club paid tribute:
“Along with our president Mr. Gonsalves, CEO Mr. Dunne, the executive team, and the entire Zondereinde community, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife, young son, and family.
Bevin’s immense contributions, both on and off the field, leave an immeasurable legacy. Our community feels his loss deeply, but heaven is richer for his presence. We salute you, Bevin Fortuin, Springbok no. 780, for the profound impact you made on the Northam Rhinos and the Setaria and Zondereinde communities. Rest easy, champ.”
Fortuin’s passing leaves a huge void in South African rugby circles, where he will be remembered as both a proud Springbok and a dedicated mentor to the next generation.
