Transfer News: Malcolm Marx one of multiple Springboks stars set to quit

Marx and Ox Nche have both been linked with moves to the English top flight by Daily Mail Sport, with both players approaching the latter stages of their careers.

In previous years, Japan and France have emerged as the most attractive destinations for players seeking a lucrative final move, but renewed investment in PREM Rugby could now change the landscape.

The acquisition of Newcastle by Red Bull has injected fresh money into the league, creating the possibility of English clubs attracting some of the biggest names in world rugby.

At 31 and 32 respectively, Marx and Nche are likely to see their international careers come to an end after the 2027 World Cup, given they would both be well into their 30s by the time the 2031 tournament arrives.

Nche currently plays for the Durban-based Sharks, while Marx is plying his trade in Japan with the Kubota Spears. Both could therefore be tempted by the opportunity to make a career switch to rugby's traditional home.

Marx is widely regarded as one of the world's leading hookers and was crowned the 2025 World Rugby Men's 15s Player of the Year. Nche also made history that year by becoming the first prop to be nominated for the prestigious award.

The increased investment in PREM Rugby has also led to discussions around the introduction of a second marquee player spot, which would allow clubs to sign two players outside of the salary cap. There has also been speculation that the salary cap itself could be increased.

At least one of those changes would likely be required for clubs to afford the arrival of several world-class players approaching the latter stages of their careers.

However, with significant new investment entering the league, it could be only a matter of time before PREM Rugby has the financial power to make such moves possible.

Daily Mail Sport has also reported that seven All Blacks stars are being touted for moves to English rugby, with Damian McKenzie, Ardie Savea and Beauden Barrett among the names mentioned.

The new franchise model being adopted by PREM Rugby has already attracted significant investment and could pave the way for the league to bring some of the biggest names in world rugby to England.
