Transfer News: Ireland fly-half linked with early exit after disappointing season

L'Indépendant reports that the 13th-placed Top 14 club are preparing to sign Byrne despite uncertainty surrounding possible relegation to Pro D2.

Perpignan have already made several ambitious moves in the transfer market, bringing in players such as Marco Riccioni from Saracens, All Black Sevu Reece, and scrum-half Luke McGrath, who spent ten seasons alongside Byrne at Leinster.

That existing partnership could prove valuable for the Catalan club as it looks to strengthen at fly-half following the confirmed departures of Benjamín Urdapilleta, who is retiring, and Tommaso Allan, who is joining Zebre Parma.

Byrne brings significant experience, having earned 22 caps for Ireland, including four starts.

Throughout much of his career he operated in the shadow of Johnny Sexton, both internationally and at Leinster, where he made 186 appearances, including 119 starts, scoring 1,196 points and 11 tries.

During his time at Leinster, Byrne won the European Cup in 2018 and reached further finals in 2019, 2022, and 2024. He also lifted the United Rugby Championship, previously the Pro14, in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2025, before playing a role in Ireland’s 2023 Grand Slam campaign.

His move to Gloucester came with high expectations and reportedly a substantial salary, but he has struggled to make the desired impact.

After a string of disappointing performances, Byrne lost his place to Charlie Atkinson and has since been labelled as one of the season’s biggest transfer disappointments.

A move away from the Cherry and Whites could offer the 31-year-old the chance to revive his career.

Although Byrne remains under contract until 2028, Gloucester are reportedly open to releasing him and are willing to listen to offers.

L'Indépendant also reports that Perpignan are in advanced discussions with Toulon and Italy fly-half Paolo Garbisi. Toulon are said to be ready to move on from Garbisi as they plan for the future with Argentine playmaker Tomás Albornoz.

Talks between the parties have reportedly taken place in recent weeks.
