"Time's up?" - Dave Rennie makes feelings crystal clear on Beauden Barrett

The two-time World Rugby Player of the Year has been one of the biggest talking points of New Zealand's campaign after being overlooked for every matchday 23 despite the All Blacks maintaining their unbeaten run.

With younger options such as Damian McKenzie and Ruben Love preferred, many supporters have questioned whether Barrett's glittering international career is nearing its end.

However, Rennie was quick to dismiss any suggestion that the 144-Test star has fallen out of favour.

Speaking about Barrett's influence behind the scenes, Rennie said: "I've been so impressed with him. I haven't coached Beauden before. His contributions have been massive, he's training really well."

Rather than viewing Barrett's absence as a negative, Rennie believes it highlights the strength of the All Blacks' squad.

"He's been impressive, so if someone of that quality is sitting in the wings, I guess it shows how strong we are in that position," he added.

Rennie also praised Barrett's leadership and rugby intelligence, revealing the experienced playmaker has continued to make a significant impact away from matchdays.

"I've been really impressed with the rugby IQ of a number of these guys. We've got every single player in some sort of group where they have to contribute and get in front of the group. I'm learning lots about these men, and it's been impressive."

While Rennie's words will reassure Barrett's supporters, the reality remains that one of New Zealand's greatest-ever players is yet to feature during the tournament. With competition fierce across the backline, the race to force his way back into the All Blacks' plans is only becoming tougher.

Rennie's praise suggests Barrett is far from being out of favour internally, but actions often speak louder than words. If the All Blacks legend continues to be left out of matchday squads, questions over whether his remarkable Test career is drawing to a close will only grow louder.
