From awkward locations and poor facilities to flat atmospheres and questionable designs, we’ve ranked some of the worst stadiums in rugby union.

Sale Sharks’ home ground is decent in terms of basic facilities, but it falls down when it comes to accessibility and location.

While its position just off the motorway makes it convenient for drivers, getting there by any other means is difficult. The main stand overlooks the motorway, which is far from an appealing view, and there is often an unpleasant smell from a nearby sewage plant.

Scotstoun does not quite match the stature of a club like Glasgow Warriors. As an athletics venue, the main stand resembles a leisure centre, while much of the rest of the ground feels temporary.

Although it is reasonably well located within Glasgow, the stadium lacks a sense of permanence and can be bitterly cold on matchdays.

Located centrally in Newport, Rodney Parade suffers from a clash of old and new that never fully comes together. Some areas feel dated and makeshift, while one stand along the touchline appears more modern.

It still feels very much like a football ground, and the pitch has had well-documented issues over the years, which hurts its overall standing.

A divisive venue, The Rec is very much a love it or hate it stadium. Its setting in the picturesque city of Bath is among the best in rugby.

However, the stadium itself lacks quality facilities. Much of it feels temporary and somewhat lacking in character, despite the passion of its supporters. High ticket prices do not help its case either.

Kingston Park is not a bad venue and can be a solid place to watch rugby, but it is infamous for being one of the coldest grounds in the sport. Strong winds frequently sweep across the stadium.

Its artificial pitch has also drawn criticism, particularly due to concerns about player injuries, highlighted during incidents such as a Bristol Bears match recently.

The StoneX Stadium is hampered by a poor atmosphere and the presence of a running track, which distances fans from the action. Accessibility is also an issue, despite its London location.

Like Scotstoun, it is an athletics venue that struggles to compare with more purpose-built rugby grounds in the Premiership.

Despite being relatively new, Hive Stadium has its shortcomings. Sightlines can be obstructed, and its small size gives it more of a training ground feel than a professional venue.

Situated in the shadow of Murrayfield, it lacks character. While modern in some respects, issues such as strong winds and the absence of WiFi detract from the overall experience.

Narbonne’s stadium is an unusual inclusion, largely due to its large running track and previously poor safety standards. At one point, capacity was reduced to just 3,000 because it failed to meet modern regulations.

Although renovations have improved matters, quirks like the unusual structure behind one set of posts still make it feel somewhat unattractive.

Ellis Park is an iconic rugby venue and an incredible place to watch the Springboks. However, it does not quite deliver the same experience for Lions matches in the URC.

Low attendances, safety concerns linked to its inner city Doornfontein location, and a lack of atmosphere during these fixtures all detract from its reputation.

Connacht’s home ground has seen recent improvements, but historically it has been one of the least impressive rugby venues. Prior to its 2024 to 2026 redevelopment, it was small, basic, exposed to the elements, and lacking in facilities.

While it benefits from a central location and a strong atmosphere, lingering issues and the contrast with the new main stand mean it still falls short overall.
