From veteran internationals to record-breaking late appearances, these players broke barriers, challenged assumptions about age in elite competition, and showed that top-level rugby does not always end in a player’s thirties.

A true icon of Uruguayan rugby, Diego Ormaechea remains his country's most-capped player, earning 73 international appearances and scoring 16 tries for a total of 79 points across a remarkable 20-year career between 1979 and 1999.

At 40 years old, Ormaechea became the oldest player ever to appear at a Rugby World Cup when he captained Uruguay at their first tournament in 1999. He also crossed for a try in Uruguay's 27-15 victory over Spain.

Although he initially stepped away from the game after the World Cup, he returned for one final season with Carrasco Polo Club before retiring in 2001 at the age of 41.

Ma'a Nonu played a pivotal role in New Zealand's Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2011 and 2015, becoming one of a select group of players to lift the trophy more than once.

Widely regarded as one of the finest centres in rugby union history, Nonu continues to add to his legacy. He currently holds the Top 14 records for both the oldest player to make an appearance and the oldest try scorer.

Now 44, Nonu departed Toulon at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season but has yet to formally announce his retirement, fuelling speculation that he may continue playing.

One of rugby's most celebrated figures, Hugo Porta is a member of both the International Rugby Hall of Fame and the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he earned 58 caps for Argentina and captained the national team 34 times, including at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987.

Porta extended his playing career well into his forties. In April 1999, at the age of 47, he came off the bench for the Pumas against a World XV in Buenos Aires and marked the occasion by kicking a conversion.

Mark Spencer made headlines when he represented Qatar against Uzbekistan in the 2012 HSBC Asian Five Nations tournament at 57 years and 340 days old. Even more remarkably, it was his international debut.

Born in the United States, Spencer qualified for Qatar through residency and went on to become one of the oldest players ever to appear in international rugby. He held the Guinness World Record for the oldest international rugby player until it was later surpassed by another player from the Gulf region.

Topping the list is Colin Stanley, who is believed to be the oldest international rugby union player in history. He represented Saudi Arabia against Jordan on 15 September 2017 at the age of 58 years and 116 days.

Playing primarily at tighthead prop, Stanley helped Saudi Arabia secure a 58-10 victory, the nation's first international win. The match took place at Petra University in Amman, Jordan.

While the fixture was not an official World Rugby test match, it was sanctioned by the Saudi Arabian and Jordanian rugby federations.

Stanley qualified through the 36-month residency rule and had previously played club rugby in Saudi Arabia with Al Khobar.
