England and Harlequins prop Joe Marler has been BANNED for comments made towards Bristol flanker Jake Heenan.
In a physical encounter at The Stoop, the two sides were preparing for the scrum when the Harlequins loosehead muttered something which generated a huge reaction from the Bristol players.
Marler reportedly not once but twice made remarks about the mother of one of the Bristol players – namely that she was a sex worker.
It was revealed following the game that Jake Heenan’s mother is currently hospital-bound, hence the emotional reaction following the comment at the scrum.
Full transcript:
Jake Heenan: ‘Hey, brother, you’re better than that, hey?’
Joe Marler: ‘I’m not your brother. I’m clearly not your brother am I.’
Heenan: ‘You’re better than that mate’
Marler: ‘There’s no way I’m from the same mother as you. Your mother is a ****ing whore.
[players were audibly taken aback by comments. Heenan says something to the referee Karl Dickson about what Marler which sounds like ‘He said my mum was a whore to my face’]
Marler [again]: ‘Your mother’s a whore’
At this point the scuffle breaks out with some inaudible exchanges.
Referee Karl Dickson: ‘Who stared that?’
Max Lahiff: ‘Marler called his mother a whore’.
Players continue to clash.
Heenan: ‘My mum’s in hospital with cancer’
Referee Dickson: ‘Alex just take him back. Take him back. I know there was an allegation of what was said. I actually didn’t hear what was said. If it was really clear on the comms afterwards, it will be dealt with’.
Apology:
Marler wrote on Twitter: "Yep. You’re right. I’m sorry @HeenanJake – piss poor from me. Owe you a pint/coffee in the new year.”
The England prop will find out today if he is to face a disciplinary committee over the incident.

The former England captain wrote on Twitter: "Reading people abusing Joe Marler on here, in response to Joe abusing someone? That works doesn’t it !!! Neither is acceptable, not even if you type it! At least Joe has apologised for his………."

- Marler started his career at Haywards Heath RFC in Sussex where he played in the same side as fellow England international Billy Twelvetrees
- After joining the Quins academy in 2008, the prop spent some time on loan to Esher and Worthing
- He’s been nicknamed Croissant. In his own words, it’s because: “The boys think I have a nose that looks like a French pastry.”
- Marler was captain for England at U18s level and represented the U20 squad throughout the Junior World Championship in summer 2009

Quins future uncertain?
Having been linked to Leicester Tigers last January, the England prop confirmed that his current deal runs until the end of the 2022/23 season.
Quins are thought to be keen to keep Marler, obviously, but will face fierce competition to hold onto arguably the most recognisable player in the world.
The prop won his 200th cap for Harlequins in January 2020 and the following season was named Man of the Match in the Premiership Final.
Bath, who seem to be signing everyone with Finn Russell their latest addition, have been mentioned while reports in France have linked French heavyweights Montpellier, Racing 92 and Toulon with a potential move.

March 2016: “Gypsy boy” comment
Wales prop Samson Lee was surrounded by white shirts before his opposite number Marler strode over and called him “Gyspy boy”, his words clearly being heard on the audio.
He was banned for two matches and fined £20,000 for breaching regulations by using unsporting and discriminatory language.
April 2016: Kicks opponent in the head
He picked up another two-week ban following an incident in his comeback match, for kicking Grenoble hooker Arnaud Héguy in the head during a European Challenge Cup semi-final.
June 2016: "W****r" insult
The prop received a formal warning from the Rugby Football Union for breaking its code of conduct after calling the Wallabies’ 1991 World Cup winning coach Bob Dwyer a “w****r” on Twitter during a row over legality of the scrummaging technique of Dan Cole.
September 2017: Ugly tussle with England team-mate
Haskell claimed Marler had choked him with the strap of his scrum cap, before squirting him in the face with water.
October 2017: Elbow strike
Marler was banned for three weeks in October 2017 after striking now Wales lock Will Rowlands with an elbow in a European Champions Cup clash.
January 2018: Shoulder charge
Harlequins were 22-17 up when the England prop dropped his shoulder into Sale Sharks flanker TJ Ioane, leading to referee Matt Carley dismissing him from the field.
“That’s the part of the game we need to take out, where someone’s defenceless and you can knock them with your shoulder,” said Sale Sharks’ Steve Diamond.
March 2020: Penis grab
The incident, and the subsequent 10-week ban handed out as punishment, were subject of lots of discussion - with some suggesting it's normal in rugby and others saying it's not.
As a result of the coronavirus lockdown, the ban ended without Marler missing any matches since every fixture that Marler could have played was postponed.
