A look at the one time 'guaranteed' British & Irish Lions starters who have slipped down the pecking order following the 2021 Guinness Six Nations.

#5. Owen Farrell (England)

It doesn’t matter that he’s the England captain and a candidate for Lions skipper, he is struggling for form. But he is a Test-match animal, a quality that always appeals to Gatland. However, he's no longer a guarenteed starter with Johnny Sexon and Dan Biggar. impressing during the Six Nations.

#4. Jonathan Davies (Wales)

Back from injury, and you sense that if he’s fit then Gatland will turn to an old favourite at centre once more. His fitness was the main issue, but combine Davies’ experience and with his playmaking ability and it’s hard to not see him involved. However, the emergence of George North in the midfield and the stellar form of Ireland's Robbie Henshaw means he'd not guaranteed a starting spot.

#3. Maro Itoje (England)

Itoje looked good against Scotland in a dismal cause, and he was strong against Italy. It is inconceivable that he will not be involved. However, the form of Iain Henderson, Tadhg Beirne and Alun Wyn Jones means his starting place is no longer guaranteed.

#2. James Ryan (Ireland)

He hasn't enjoyed his best tournament, and to be brutally honest he's been outshone by fellow countryman Iain Henderson and Tadhg Beirne. The 24-year-old should still make the squad, but a starting spot is no longer in his hands.

#1. Jamie George (England)

George has good heritage with Gatland and had an outstanding 2017 series. He was selected by 18/20 legends to start for the Lion prior to the 2021 Six Nations, but the hooker finished the Championship not even being England's first choice. The odds now suggest Wales Ken Owens is the favourite to start at no.2
