The 5 Uncapped England Players to Watch in the 2023 Guinness Six Nations

There are five uncapped players in contention to make their debut in the upcoming Guinness Six Nations, in what is an exciting opportunity ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

London Irish's flying winger Ollie Hassell-Collins, has rightly caught the attention of Steve Borthwick, and earned himself a call up to the England squad. Consistently one of the stand out names each week for the Exiles, Hassell-Collins is a dynamic and powerful winger, who is the joint third highest try scorer in the Premiership this season, with eight tries.

Confident with the ball in hand, the 23-year-old always looks to gain meters, and use his explosivity to break through the gain-line. The fourth highest for recorded meters made in the Premiership this season with 697m, London Irish utilise the winger in the majority of their attacking set-ups.

An exciting prospect who is getting boundless game time at Irish, Ollie Hassell-Collins has already provided many highlights for the Exiles this season. He shone under the watchful eye of Borthwick, as he scored a miraculous solo-try from inside his own half against Leicester Tigers. Hassell-Collins took off along the left wing, and outwitted Freddie Burns' tackle attempt to score a memorable try, which has been re-played time after time by Irish fans.

The latest exciting young prospect to explode out of the Twickenham Stoop, Cadan Murley ignites the pitch for Harlequins week after week. Tying his new-found England teammate Ollie Hassall-Collins, Murley also has eight tries this season in the Premiership.

Murley eclipses Hassall-Collins with metres made, and sits second overall this season. Only Newcastle's Mateo Carreras has ran further with ball in hand than Murley, who has recorded a staggering 793m so far, in this Premiership campaign. The young Harlequin is the latest breakthrough talent, that is looking to make the short walk from the Stoop to Twickenham Stadium a regular occurrence.

A source of many 'try-lights', Murley's best photo finish came early on this season. The 23-year-old's diving try against Northampton Saints in October, after beating three back-peddling defenders along the left wing, certainly got the conversation started for an England call-up. Murley has only gotten better since, be prepared to see some exhilarating runs in the England shirt.

Departing Newcastle Falcons for pastures new at Gloucester last month, George McGuigan has settled into life at Kingsholm, and found exciting form ahead of the Six Nations. McGuigan enjoyed two spells for Falcons, either side of a a year at Leicester Tigers.

McGuigan scored plentiful tries at Kingston Park, as the 29-year-old crossed the line 48 times for Newcastle, effectively utilising their rolling maul to get onto the scoresheet.

McGuigan shines at the set-piece, and would hope to drive his England teammates over the line if called upon. The Gloucester hooker has Jamie George to train alongside at Pennyhill Park, who is a proven scorer from set-plays, and the first hooker to ever score a hat-trick for England.

The hooker could certainly learn from George, and pick up a few tricks of the front-row trade for an eventual England debut. Despite being named in Eddie Jones' training squad for last Summer's Australia tour, McGuigan failed to get onto the pitch for his country.

Things may be different under Borthwick, who overlooked his Gloucester teammate and fan favourite Val Rapava-Ruskin, opting instead for McGuigan as one of the back-up hookers.

Joining the front row collective at the England camp, is a Harlequins hooker who is wise beyond his years. At just 26-years-old, Walker has been under the tutelage of Wales and British Lions legend Adam Jones, since arriving from Bath in the Summer of 2021.

He has since been learning the subtle advantages in the scrum, and how to best utilise his power around the pitch. Walker has established himself as a consistent name on the team sheet, when Tabai Matson and co write down their front row for the weekend.

No stranger to leadership roles at a young age, Walker has the accolade of being the youngest ever captain of his previous club, Leeds Tykes. At just 17 years of age, Walker stepped up and led his side out, who then went under the name of Yorkshire Carnegie, in the 2014/15 RFU Championship. Walker also has the accomplishment of being the youngest ever forward to play first team rugby at Harlequins.

Being shot into the spotlight at a young age speaks volumes of Walker's England potential. Now in his mid-20s, the Harlequins hooker is ready and prepared to make the step up onto the international stage. A last twenty minute run-out, would see Walker fit to burst with adrenaline, so expect some impact scrummaging and an eagerness to carry in the white shirt.

#5. Fin Smith

The Northampton Saints back is another young star, who is hoping to make his international debut in the upcoming Six Nations. At just 20-years-old, Borthwick is looking to fast-track Smith towards his first England cap, as the talented fly half is also eligible to play for Scotland. Smith's Grandfather was the late Tom Elliot, the Scottish International prop, who also represented the British and Irish Lions.

Smith is certainly a prospect talent for the future, and under the leadership of Owen Farrell, he can grow exponentially as a player. Similarly to Marcus, Fin Smith enters his first opportunity to represent England as a young fan favourite number 10, but could leave the Six Nations as a more experienced, wiser player.

Saint's Director of Rugby Phil Dowson recognises Smith's talents, and has rewarded the young fly half with consistent game time and match day responsibilities. Since signing in October of last year following the financial fall of Worcester Warriors, and a cameo appearance at Ampthill, Smith has eight caps for Northampton, and has already scored 70 points for the men in green and black.

Smith became the youngest ever player to start for Worcester Warriors, as he led from the front against Bath at just 18-years-old. A talented graduate of the England Under 18s and Under 20s, Smith has ran out in the age group representative Six Nations before, but aspires for a full debut this coming competition.
