Super Rugby winner and All Blacks hopeful makes move to Top 14 giants

The Blues confirmed the move late last night, noting that Lam remains fully committed to the club for the entirety of the upcoming campaign, where he is expected to continue playing a key role both on and off the field.

Since making his Super Rugby debut for the Blues in 2021, Lam has developed into one of the side’s most dynamic backs. He has made 58 appearances for the club and was a pivotal figure in the team’s 2024 title-winning season.

The 27-year-old will complete the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season before heading to France, where he will link up with fellow Blues champions Harry Plummer, Pita Gus Sowakula and George Moala.

Lam, who successfully transitioned from the outside backs into the midfield last season, said his focus remains firmly on finishing his time in Auckland strongly.

“This club has shaped me. The Blues have been my home and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. I’m grateful for the support from the coaches, staff, my teammates and our fans.

“While I’m excited for the opportunity in France, my goal right now is to give everything to the Blues in 2026 and finish my time here in the best possible way.”

At international level, Lam has featured regularly for the All Blacks XV and has earned All Blacks call-ups as injury cover, but his move overseas will end his national eligibility.

He becomes the second Blues player confirmed to be leaving New Zealand after the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, following last month’s announcement that All Blacks back-rower Hoskins Sotutu will join English Premiership side Newcastle Red Bulls.

Blues general manager of rugby Murray Williams said Lam’s contribution to the club would be long remembered.

“AJ is a Blues man through and through. He’s grown with this club from the moment he arrived.

“Clermont are getting a special player, but we’re grateful that we have another full season with him. AJ is locked in for 2026 and we know he’ll give everything for the jersey.”
