Super Rugby: Qualifying Finals - Hurricanes hammer Brumbies with record-breaking win

The top-seeded Hurricanes scored nine tries, in a demolition job that not only booked their place in the semi-finals, but extended Australian rugby's miserable record in New Zealand playoff matches to 0-22.

The defeat marked the biggest finals loss suffered by an Australian side in Super Rugby history and capped a disappointing campaign for the Brumbies, whose season began with three consecutive victories before a steady fade to black.

Any hopes of the Brumbies finally ending that unwanted losing streak were extinguished inside a brutal first half. The Hurricanes raced to a 31-0 lead before taking a commanding 38-7 advantage into the break, the most points the Brumbies have ever conceded in the opening half of a Super Rugby match.

It was a night where virtually everything went right for Clark Laidlaw's side and nothing went right for Stephen Larkham's men. Hurricanes half-back Cam Roigard crossed twice, while lock Warner Dearns grabbed a brace of tries. Substitute Ngatungane Punivai added a second-half hat-trick as the hosts ran riot. At the heart of the performance was fly-half Ruben Love, who delivered a masterclass in game management and kicking, finishing with nine conversions and a penalty in difficult Wellington conditions.

"It was personal for us this week," Hurricanes scrum-half Roigard said afterwards.

The Hurricanes' dominant display prompted admiration from the Stan Sport commentary team. "These guys aren't just hot, they're white hot," Wallabies great Michael Hooper said after Punivai completed his hat-trick. "This is an absolute rout," added fellow Wallabies legend Tim Horan.

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham was brutally honest in his assessment.

"It was very impressive from the Hurricanes," he said. "By halftime, the game was over. Too many fundamentals of our game were not consistent enough. Set piece wasn't where it needed to be, our ability to solve to an edge just wasn't there tonight.

"We couldn't hold the ball. Our urgency into the breakdown wasn't consistent enough. Their defence was outstanding, their set piece outstanding, their counterattack, their ability to run off turnover ball, world class.

"Big bodies into the breakdown, ball carries so we've learned a lesson there. It's been an inconsistent season for us, to say the least. We're terribly disappointed. A great game from the Hurricanes tonight but just not the standard that you would expect from a Brumbies outfit and maybe that's what you've seen all year. But just stick with us, we really appreciate your support."

Further concern for Australian rugby came when Wallabies hopeful Blake Schoupp was helped from the field with what appeared to be a serious leg injury. Corey Toole and Tane Edmed scored the Brumbies' only tries of the evening, while full-back Tom Wright produced occasional flashes of quality in an otherwise one-sided contest.

The Hurricanes will now host a semi-final in Wellington on June 13, while Australia's hopes of ending a long wait for Super Rugby silverware now rest solely with the Queensland Reds.

The Reds face a daunting trip to Hamilton to take on the Chiefs on Saturday, but head coach Les Kiss remains optimistic.

"We've just got to go there with the confidence and belief that we have put our best foot forward," Kiss said. "I think we can scare them, that's for sure."

With the Brumbies swept aside in emphatic fashion, Australian rugby's long search for a finals victory on New Zealand soil goes on.
