Super Rugby Aupiki: Round 1 - Record crowd packs Christchurch as Matatu make history

A record crowd of 11,793 packed One NZ Stadium in Christchurch as Matatū delivered the biggest win in the franchise's history. Meanwhile, the Blues overcame a red card to comfortably account for Hurricanes Poua at Eden Park. In case you missed any of the action, here's our recap of the opening round.

Matatū delivered a statement performance to open their campaign, running in eight tries in a commanding 52-26 victory over Chiefs Manawa in front of a record crowd at One NZ Stadium. The attendance of 11,793 shattered the previous record for a standalone domestic women's rugby match in New Zealand and provided a fitting backdrop for Matatū's most dominant display to date.

New recruit Elinor-Plum King stole the show with a hat-trick on debut for the Christchurch-based side, crossing twice in the final 10 minutes to cap a memorable afternoon. The hosts controlled proceedings from the outset, with Black Ferns halfback Maia Joseph orchestrating the attack superbly. Joseph crossed for a try herself and played a key role in several others as Matatū repeatedly exposed the visitors.

Former netball star Paris Lokotui also impressed in the forward pack, making her presence felt at the breakdown and helping create opportunities through her work around the field. Chiefs Manawa remained in touch through their driving maul, with Vici-Rose Green scoring twice and Leata Puni-Lio and Ariana Bayler also crossing. However, they struggled to match Matatū's pace and execution in open play.

Kaipo Olsen-Baker, Amy du Plessis, Binky Muamua and Laura Bayfield joined King and Joseph on the scoresheet as Matatū posted both their highest-ever score and biggest winning margin.

The Blues began their quest for a third consecutive Super Rugby Aupiki title with a convincing 42-7 victory over Hurricanes Poua at Eden Park. Despite losing lock Maama Vaipulu to a red card before halftime, the defending champions proved far too strong, running in six tries and keeping the visitors scoreless after the opening quarter.

The Blues made an explosive start, with young Black Fern Braxton Sorensen-McGee opening the scoring after linking up with fellow debutant Sariyah Paitai. Former Chiefs Manawa back Mererangi Paul quickly added a second as the hosts raced into an early advantage.

Hurricanes Poua briefly threatened when Samantha Taylor crossed to cut the margin to seven points, but a yellow card to Krystal Murray proved costly. The Blues immediately capitalised through Sylvia Brunt before Atlanta Lolohea crashed over to establish control.

The match took another turn late in the first half when Vaipulu was initially shown a yellow card for striking an opponent before it was upgraded to a 20-minute red card following review. Even with a player down, the Blues dominated after the break. The visitors enjoyed periods of possession but were unable to break through a committed defensive effort from the home side.

Milestone player Liana Mikaele-Tu'u, appearing in her 20th match for the Blues, crossed in the second half before Tafito Lafaele completed the scoring to seal a comprehensive opening-round win. The result was made even more impressive given the Blues fielded seven debutants and entered the season after losing both of their pre-season fixtures.
