Scotland fullback Stuart Hogg was left crying in his hotel room by the injury that ruled him out of the British and Irish Lions tour last summer.
He suffered a freak injury, running into team-mate Conor Murray's elbow while chasing down a kick during a warm-up win over the Crusaders in Christchurch.
“I looked up and all I could see was blood all over my hands and all over my arms and just a huge amount of pain,” Hogg said.
"You can’t play about with eyes. You know there’s - it kills me to say it - but there’s a lot more to life than rugby.
“I’ve got to look after myself.
“As much as I would love to be staying on… it’s going to be tough.”
