Steve Borthwick spotted in France as England eye former international

The experienced tighthead left Bristol Bears for Toulon in 2024, making him ineligible for England selection under the RFU's policy that prevents overseas-based players from representing the national side.

Now 33, Sinckler has won almost 70 England caps and has toured twice with the British and Irish Lions. He also started the 2019 Rugby World Cup final against South Africa before his game ended early following a heavy collision.

While attempting to tackle Makazole Mapimpi, Sinckler accidentally collided with teammate Maro Itoje's elbow and was knocked unconscious. Medical staff treated him on the field before helping him off, ruling him out for the remainder of the match as England went on to lose 32-12.

His experience would add plenty to England's front row, although tighthead is not currently viewed as a major concern thanks to the form of Joe Heyes.

However, with Will Stuart sidelined through injury, England's depth in the position has been stretched, meaning Sinckler could provide valuable cover if he became available again.

England will be looking to improve after a disappointing Six Nations campaign followed by a respectable but unspectacular Nations Championship. With the 2027 Rugby World Cup now just a year away, Borthwick will be keen to have the strongest squad possible as England aim to challenge for the title.

The image of Borthwick in France was first shared on Instagram before journalist Nik Simon posted it on X with the caption:

"Steve Borthwick visiting @rugbytoulon_ this week ?

"Sounds like he’s speaking to Kyle Sinckler - who could feature in England’s World Cup squad if he joins a Prem club for the 27/28 season."

Sinckler would not be the first experienced England international to return from France. Courtney Lawes completed a move to Sale Sharks this summer, putting himself back in contention for international selection.

That is not the case for brothers Jack and Tom Willis. Both remain based in France and, with no significant reports linking either player with a return to the PREM, they currently appear set to miss out on England's World Cup squad.
