Steve Borthwick gives verdict on England future after worst ever Six Nations

England’s tournament ended in heartbreaking fashion at the Stade de France as Thomas Ramos slotted the winning kick with the final play of a chaotic 13-try, 94-point thriller.

Borthwick’s side had led with just two minutes remaining after producing their best performance of the championship, but Ramos’ late intervention condemned England to a fourth defeat of the campaign.

England finish the tournament with four defeats and just one victory — against Wales — after losses to Scotland, Ireland, Italy and France.

Despite the pressure mounting, Borthwick remained defiant.

“I am very clear on the direction of the team, very clear on what we've got to do,” he told ITV.

“We're disappointed, we wanted to achieve much more in this championship. Disappointed for our supporters, we wanted to give them something to celebrate.”

“We've been unable to do that. But we will make sure that we do that going forward.”

The England boss also insisted he is the right man to lead the team through the difficult period.

“I believe I am the right man to lead this team forward regardless,” he said.

“The team has been going through a tough spell, but it has a lot of growth in it. This experience and pain everyone is feeling now will be used to make the team stronger.”

Borthwick also paid tribute to France after the dramatic contest.

“Well firstly we should congratulate France, they are a tremendous team and have done so well,” he said.

“It was an excellent game and they are formidable opponents.”
