The 34-year-old, who enjoyed a playing career at Leicester and Wasps as a back-rower, transitioned into coaching with Wasps in 2017 following his retirement. He then returned to Welford Road in 2022, initially as senior academy coach before taking up the defence coach role in December 2022, a position he was stood down from in February.

After Worcester's suspension from all competitions in September 2022 due to unpaid taxes and their subsequent administration, the club successfully navigated an RFU-led tender process and will return to the expanded second tier next season.

Warriors CEO Stephen Vaughan shared his thoughts on the appointment: "Matt is the right person to lead this new chapter. Having worked closely with him in the past, he’s perfect for the role, and we’re thrilled to have him join us from the start. He understands the values and culture we’re aiming to build here and the potential of Worcester Warriors. His top-level experience, leadership, and connections will be crucial as we rebuild and make our return to competitive rugby."

Despite tighthead Nick Schonert signing with Japan’s Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars, Worcester are still hopeful of luring the former Warrior back to Sixways next season.

They’re also leading the chase for veteran Wales scrum-half Lloyd Williams, who will be leaving Ealing Trailfinders this summer.

Also in their sights is former Wasps flyer Josh Bassett, now 33, who scored 63 tries in 179 appearances before Wasps' collapse in 2022. A return to Welford Road for the Luton-born winger is expected before heading to Worcester.

Fan favourite Matt Kvesic is reportedly set for a third stint at the club, with Niall Annett and Matt Rogerson also on the radar as the Warriors gear up for a blockbuster return.
