Statement: Springbok player Vuyolwethu Maqholo passes away aged 30

South African rugby is in mourning following the heartbreaking death of former Springbok Women’s star Vuyolwethu Maqholo, who passed away on Friday at just 30 years old.

Maqholo, born on 7 April 1995 in Middledrift, Eastern Cape, was a dynamic and versatile back who proudly wore the green and gold in seven Test matches between 2018 and 2019. She played both fullback and flyhalf, earning admiration for her skill, composure, and playmaking ability.

Her rugby journey began at Josi Marela High and took off quickly. She first pulled on a South African jersey in 2013, touring the UK with the SA U20 team, and soon became a key figure in the domestic game, helping Western Province claim three Women’s Premier Division titles between 2017 and 2019.

Her senior breakthrough came in 2016 at a national training camp, and a year later she featured in the SA Women’s Select side, sharing the field with current Springbok captain Nolusindiso Booi.

Paying tribute, SA Rugby President Mark Alexander said:

“On behalf of the South African Rugby Union and the entire rugby family, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Vuyo Maqholo – an extraordinary woman whose fierce talent and passion for the sport were felt across every try line she crossed.”
