Statement: Glasgow Warriors confirms SEVEN departures including Huw Jones

Supporters will get the chance to celebrate the contributions of the outgoing stars after Friday night’s final regular-season clash against Cardiff in the club’s annual Plaster It Purple fixture.

Head coach Franco Smith paid tribute to the departing group, thanking each player for their commitment and contribution to the club’s recent success.

The retiring fly-half leaves Glasgow as one of the club’s great servants after making 163 appearances across two spells. Only Dan Parks and Tommy Hayes have scored more points in Warriors history than Weir, who amassed 967 points and played a major role in title-winning campaigns in 2015 and 2024. His emotional farewell came earlier this year when he crossed for a try against Zebre Parma in his final appearance at Scotstoun.

Loose-head prop Jamie Bhatti departs after 134 appearances for his hometown club. A product of Hillfoots RFC, Bhatti became a centurion in 2024 and was a cornerstone of Glasgow’s URC title-winning pack, starting all three knockout fixtures during the successful 2023/24 campaign, including the final win over the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria.

Hooker Johnny Matthews leaves as one of the most popular figures in recent Glasgow history. Matthews scored 51 tries in 106 appearances, placing him third on the club’s all-time try-scoring list. He also became the first Warrior to score five tries in a single match and finished as the URC’s leading try-scorer in 2023/24.

Fly-half Adam Hastings ends his second spell at Scotstoun having scored 537 points in 88 appearances. Hastings passed the 500-point mark earlier this season and produced one of his standout performances in Glasgow’s famous comeback victory over Stade Toulousain in the Investec Champions Cup.

Centre Huw Jones leaves after re-establishing himself as one of world rugby’s top midfielders under Franco Smith. Jones scored the decisive try in the 2024 URC Grand Final and carried that form onto the international stage, earning selection for the 2025 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia, where he featured in all three Tests.

Powerful number eight Jack Dempsey became a fan favourite during his time in Glasgow thanks to his relentless carrying and defensive work. The Scotland international made 67 appearances and played a key role in the Warriors’ 2024 URC triumph, topping the tackle count in the Grand Final victory over the Bulls.

Tongan international Sione Vailanu leaves after an impactful four-year stint with the Warriors. Known for his explosive ball-carrying, Vailanu made 41 appearances following his arrival from Worcester Warriors in 2022. One of his most memorable moments came with a stunning 60-metre solo try against Benetton, while he also played an important role in Glasgow’s run to the 2023 EPCR Challenge Cup final.
