Statement: Bristol Bears name ex-Scotland hooker as head coach

Bristol Bears Women have confirmed the appointment of Scott Lawson as their new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 Premiership Women’s Rugby season.

The 43-year-old joins from the Scottish Rugby Union, where he’s spent recent years as a specialist skills coach working with the national women’s team, the U20 men’s side, and Glasgow Warriors’ academy setup.

A former international with 47 Scotland caps to his name, Lawson enjoyed a 16-year professional career with stints at Glasgow, Sale, Gloucester, London Irish and Newcastle Falcons before hanging up his boots in 2018. He’s also served as director of rugby at the University of St Andrews.

Lawson will link up with the Bears after the conclusion of this summer’s U20 World Championship in Italy (29 June–19 July), where he’s currently coaching.

His arrival follows the departure of Dave Ward, who left in April after four years at the helm. Under Ward, the Bears reached their first-ever final in 2024 and made four consecutive semi-finals, but fell short on both occasions against Gloucester-Hartpury.

Lawson said the opportunity to join the Bears was one he “simply couldn’t resist.”

“From the moment I spoke with Daisie Mayes and Pat Lam, I could see the vision and alignment across the club. It’s something I’m hugely excited to be a part of,” he said.

“I’ve loved my time with Scottish Rugby and will always be grateful for the experiences, but I’m ready for this next challenge and will be relentless in pushing for success at Bristol.”

Director of Rugby Pat Lam hailed Lawson’s experience and drive.

“His knowledge, passion and commitment to development really stood out. Scott brings a wealth of experience and a winning mindset that aligns perfectly with what we’re building here at the Bears.”

The club have not revealed the length of Lawson’s contract.
