Born in Treviso on 1 April 2003 during Franco’s playing stint in Italy, Smith’s rugby journey has always carried an international flavour. He came through the Benetton youth system before relocating to South Africa in 2014, where he attended Grey College – one of the country’s most prolific rugby nurseries.

Smith quickly established himself as one of the brightest young playmakers in his age group:

At 1.81m and around 89kg, the flyhalf combines a sharp tactical kicking game with strong game management – traits often associated with his father’s coaching philosophy.

Smith has featured for the Sharks across youth and senior competitions, but game time at flyhalf has been fiercely competitive. With Jordan Hendrikse, Siya Masuku, Vusi Moyo and incoming Gianni Lombard all in the mix, opportunities have been limited.

A move back to Treviso presents more than just a club opportunity. Because he was born in Italy, Smith is eligible to represent the Azzurri – adding a compelling layer to his career trajectory. With the 2027 Rugby World Cup on the horizon, where the South Africa national rugby union team will face Italy in their opening match, the prospect of Jean Smith lining up against the country of his father’s birth would be a storyline few could ignore.
