Springbok aces back in action for all-South Africa showdown

Head coach JP Pietersen is boosted by the timely comeback of two key figures, with Nché and Aphelele Fassi both overcoming injury concerns to take their places in the starting lineup. Nché slots in at loosehead, bringing world-class power and experience back to the Sharks pack at a crucial point in the season.

The front-row powerhouse recently etched his name into rugby history after being shortlisted for World Player of the Year, becoming the first prop ever to receive the honour — a testament to his influence at the highest level.

There is further good news for the hosts as Corné Rahl and Siya Masuku return to the matchday 23, both named on a well-balanced bench that blends youthful energy with the calming presence of Springboks Phepsi Buthelezi and Jaden Hendrikse.

Pietersen has made only three changes to the starting XV. Nché replaces Phatu Ganyane at loosehead, Manu Tshituka starts at eighthman in place of Buthelezi, while Fassi comes in at fullback for Hakeem Kunene.

Despite boasting significant depth and star power, the Sharks currently sit 13th on the URC table, while the Lions occupy eighth after a solid start to their campaign.

The Durban side arrive on the back of an emphatic derby win over the Bulls and will be hoping that Nché’s return, coupled with renewed momentum after the festive break, can spark a much-needed turnaround in their URC season.
