What Siya Kolisi said in response to Haka caught on camera

As the New Zealand side performed their traditional pre-match ritual, the South African players stood arm-in-arm. However, attention repeatedly turned towards Kolisi, with the captain visibly appearing to sing something to himself.

It is believed Kolisi was singing the Gwijo, a traditional South African form of collective a cappella call-and-response singing that is deeply rooted in Xhosa culture.

None of his Springboks teammates appeared to join him, making it an individual response from the captain, who is Xhosa himself.

Kolisi was appointed Springboks captain in 2018, becoming the first black player to hold the position.

He subsequently led South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory in 2019, when they defeated England in the final, before lifting the Webb Ellis Cup again in 2023 after victory over New Zealand.

Now, Kolisi will be hoping to lead his side to a 2-1 series victory over the All Blacks at FNB Stadium this afternoon, with the match representing the third of four Tests between the two nations.

Many will view today's contest as the decisive game of the series, given it is the third and final Test to be played in South Africa. The fourth and final meeting between the rivals will take place in Baltimore.
