Six Signings Incoming? Gregor Townsend Targets Lions Star and Shearer’s Son-in-Law

Rumours from The Telegraph suggest Gregor Townsend has begun spearheading recruitment for the Newcastle Red Bulls as he looks to strengthen the squad for next season and beyond.

The Scotland head coach, who is balancing his national duties with his new advisory role at Newcastle, is said to have made a brief visit to Kingston Park on Monday as part of an early scouting mission.

Townsend, 52, remains under contract with Scotland until after the 2027 Rugby World Cup, but is reportedly assessing players whose deals expire in 2026 and 2027.

New sporting director Neil McIlroy, appointed following Steve Diamond’s departure last week, will also play a key role in reshaping the squad.

Tom Willis – Premiership back-row prize

According to reports, one of Townsend’s targets could be Tom Willis, who is out of contract at Saracens and attracting interest across the Premiership.

The 26-year-old has recently secured an upgraded Elite Player Squad (EPS) deal with England, suggesting he is in their long-term plans ahead of 2027. But with his Saracens future undecided, Newcastle could seize the chance to lure him north.

Ben White – Lions star on the radar

Also named in Telegraph rumours is Ben White, whose standout performances on the British & Irish Lions tour raised his profile significantly.

White has impressed for Toulon, though both his current club and Perpignan are reportedly keen to keep him in France. Interest from Edinburgh and Saracens adds competition, but Townsend’s connection with White at Scotland could prove decisive.

Homecomings – Davison and Hodge

Telegraph reports also link two former Falcons with potential returns: Trevor Davison and Josh Hodge.

Both will be out of contract next summer, with Davison at Northampton Saints and Hodge at Exeter Chiefs. A return to Tyneside could strengthen Newcastle’s English core while adding valuable experience.

Raffi Quirke – Possible surprise move

Although Raffi Quirke recently re-signed with Sale Sharks, The Telegraph claims he could still be on Newcastle’s radar. The dynamic scrum-half would fit well with Townsend’s attacking style and add further depth.

Joe Marchant – England-qualified abroad with a Tyneside link

Another name being monitored is Joe Marchant, in the final year of his deal at Stade Français. Newcastle’s strategy to bring England-qualified players back from overseas could make him an attractive option — and there’s an extra twist.

Marchant is engaged to Hollie Shearer, daughter of Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, adding a personal Tyneside connection to his potential move.
