Sir Clive Woodward named the THREE nailed-on players for the Lions test XV

Sir Clive Woodward singled out three standout performers as the British & Irish Lions opened their 2025 tour in dominant fashion, thrashing the Western Force 54-7 in front of a record 46,656 fans in Perth.

Despite the hosts enjoying early pressure, it was the Lions who were ruthless. Dan Sheehan, Tomos Williams, and Elliot Daly crossed in the first half to give the tourists a commanding 21-7 lead at the break. The Force’s only response came through Nic White.

After halftime, the Lions cut loose. Williams added a brilliant solo second before being forced off with an injury. Garry Ringrose, Joe McCarthy, Daly again, and Alex Mitchell all got on the scoresheet in a blistering second half.

Woodward described the Lions as “clinical, physical, and far too much for their Aussie opponents – an ominous warning for what’s to come.”

Finn Russell – "In a League of His Own"

Finn Russell was central to the Lions’ fluid attacking game, producing a magical assist for Daly’s first try and controlling proceedings from fly-half.

“Finn Russell was in a league of his own in Perth,” Woodward wrote. “He stamped his mark on the team from No 10 and proved just how good he is with a fantastic display."

The former England boss praised Russell’s balance between flair and control:

"He’s always had the ability to create something from nothing. But now there’s a maturity to his game – he picks the right passes, takes the right options, and doesn’t overplay. He will take some dislodging from the No 10 shirt."

“Simply put, the Lions have him. Australia don’t have a player of his calibre. That could be the difference in the Test series.”

Henry Pollock – "Perfect for Aussie Conditions"

Young back-rower Henry Pollock showcased his potential with a dynamic, gritty display – setting up a try, getting in the thick of a brawl, and even spending time in the sin bin.

“To see Pollock running in open spaces and chipping and chasing was excellent,” Woodward said. “The hard-running grounds of Australia will clearly suit him this summer.”

He added:

“There’s still far more to come from him. How exciting is that?”

Joe McCarthy – "Locking Down Test Contention"

Joe McCarthy impressed with a tireless shift in the engine room – dominating in the tight, making key defensive plays, and powering over for a well-earned try.

“McCarthy was a stand-out figure at lock,” said Woodward. “He did a lot of the unseen work, came up with some crucial steals in the first half when the Lions were under pressure. On the whole, this was a job well done.”
