Scott Robertson lands first coaching role since All Blacks sacking

The former Crusaders boss has been named head coach of the famous Barbarians for their 2026 summer tour, marking his first role since being axed by New Zealand Rugby earlier this year.

Robertson’s exit from the All Blacks stunned much of the rugby world in January after New Zealand Rugby confirmed he had departed following an end-of-season review. Despite reportedly winning 74 percent of his Tests in charge, the union opted to move in a different direction midway through his contract. 

Now, the charismatic Kiwi coach has wasted little time returning to the elite game.

The Barbarians announced Robertson will lead the invitational side during fixtures against South Africa national rugby union team and Wales national rugby union team this summer. 

Robertson will not be alone. Reports confirm he will work alongside former Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi, Racing 92 boss Patrice Collazo and Argentina assistant Kenny Lynn. 

Speaking after the announcement, Robertson said the Barbarians “bring the rugby world together” and described the opportunity as “special.” 

Many still view Robertson as one of rugby’s elite coaching minds after his dominant spell with the Crusaders, where he won multiple Super Rugby titles.

This latest appointment may only be temporary, but it immediately places “Razor” back in the spotlight — and potentially back in contention for another major international role in the near future.
