Scotland winger Darcy Graham swaps nations this weekend

Scotland wing Darcy Graham will swap the 15-a-side game for the sevens circuit this weekend after being named in the Great Britain Sevens squad for the crucial World Championship Series event in Bordeaux.

The Edinburgh flyer has answered an unexpected call from Scottish Rugby performance director David Nucifora, with the national governing body now overseeing the Great Britain Sevens programme as part of its elite player pathway.

Graham's inclusion comes at a pivotal moment for GB Sevens. After a disappointing outing in Valladolid, the side heads to France needing a strong finish to secure a place in the top eight of the overall standings and retain World Series status for next season.

The 27-year-old is no stranger to the shortened format, having represented Scotland Sevens between 2016 and 2018 before featuring at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

He joins Brent Jackson and Finlay Callaghan as new additions to the squad, replacing injured duo Tom Burton and Sunni Jardine. Callaghan arrives in Bordeaux fresh from captaining Scottish Thistles to victory at the famous Melrose Sevens, where they defeated Edinburgh Accies in the final.

Speaking after his selection, Graham admitted he needed little convincing to make the switch.

"David Nucifora called and asked me if I wanted to join the boys out in Bordeaux. I'm on downtime right now but I jumped at the opportunity and I'm buzzing.

"If I wasn't doing this I would just be training away so I'd rather be competing at a high level.

"I'm excited to get back out there. It's been eight years since I was last on the World Series and the game is a lot different so I'll have to flick that switch to catch up with the rest of the boys.

"There is a bit of added pressure there to finish in the top eight so it'll be a massive weekend for me and the boys."

While the men's squad sees several changes, the Great Britain women's squad remains unchanged from last weekend as they continue their own World Series campaign.

For Graham, it presents a rare opportunity to revisit the format where he first made his name, while helping Great Britain fight for their place among the world's elite sevens nations.
