Scotland Rugby boss steps away with immediate effect

Williamson only took up the role in September 2024, arriving with the task of helping steer Scottish Rugby through mounting financial pressures and significant losses off the field.

A Scottish Rugby spokesperson said: “Our chief executive Alex Williamson is currently on a period of extended leave, during which time his duties are being shared by the executive team.”

The timing comes during a positive spell for Gregor Townsend’s side on the pitch. Scotland finished third in the 2026 Six Nations after impressive victories over England, Wales and France, continuing the momentum built by the national team over recent seasons.

Despite those results, Scottish Rugby continue to face major challenges away from the action, with Williamson originally brought in to lead efforts to stabilise the organisation financially while supporting long-term growth across the professional and grassroots game.
