Sam Underhill could play for USA at Rugby World Cup

Thanks to World Rugby's eligibility regulations, several established international players have qualifying links to the United States and could yet wear the red, white and blue before the tournament kicks off.

From a Springbok star's twin brother to British & Irish Lions and Ireland internationals, these are four names who could boost the Eagles' chances at a home World Cup.

The twin brother of Springbok centre Jesse Kriel, Dan Kriel is the player most likely to make the switch.

A former Junior Springbok, Kriel played alongside the likes of Handré Pollard, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw before spells with the Bulls, Stormers, Western Province and Lions.

Now starring for the Seattle Seawolves in Major League Rugby, the 32-year-old will qualify for the USA through residency and has already stated his desire to represent the Eagles.

England flanker Sam Underhill was born in Dayton, Ohio, while his father was working in the United States.

The hard-hitting back-row has earned more than 40 England caps and toured with the British & Irish Lions, but his American birthplace means he has a qualifying connection to the USA should he ever seek an international switch later in his career.

A fit Underhill would instantly become one of the Eagles' biggest names heading into a home World Cup.

Ireland lock Joe McCarthy was born in New York before moving to Ireland as a youngster.

The Leinster second-row has developed into one of the most exciting forwards in world rugby and is expected to play a major role for Ireland over the coming years.

However, his American birth means the possibility of representing the USA remains available under World Rugby's eligibility rules.

Munster and Ireland prop Jeremy Loughman was born in Reno, Nevada, before relocating to Ireland.

The loosehead has become a regular member of Ireland's squad and brings valuable experience at the highest level.

By the time 2031 arrives, Loughman could provide the USA with much-needed know-how in one of rugby's most demanding positions.
