"Rumours persist" - Owen Farrell once again linked with sensational swap to rugby league

One nosey supporter looking at Companies House noticed and tweeted: “Interesting how Owen Farrell has just changed his business account correspondence to a Wigan address and also recently set up ‘Ancient and Loyal limited’ and ‘A&L Ventures ltd’

Ancient and Loyal is the motto for the town of Wigan, which is where the 31-year-old began his rugby education 20 years ago.

Farrell is thought to be under contract at Saracens until at least 2024, making any return to the North West not imminent. 

A user responded: “Wow, this might just possibly happen.”

Another wrote; “That time of the off-season already for the “Owen Farrell to Wigan” rumours?”

“I think he’d be a fantastic player for Wigan, and can’t see why anyone thinks otherwise. Yes he’s not played professionally but he knows the game and will transition easily enough,” commented a third.

A fourth commented: “This is the type of thing rugby league sshould do think of the profile he brings - would bring a load of neutral eyes just to see how he gets on,"

"I know that he [Farrell] likes rugby league but I know that he is ultra successful in rugby union and if I was him I would be doing exactly what he is doing," said England fullback Sam Tomkins, who was talking on  about his ongoing rivalry with Owen Farrell.

"He is enjoying himself, he is a star in the game and a star over the world in rugby union. If he ever did fancy it at the end of his career it would be amazing to see what he could do because I do genuinely believe he would be an unbelievable rugby league player.”

His education began in rugby league – he joined Wigan St Patricks at the age of eight

It’s well known that Owen is the son of Ireland head coach Andy Farrell. However, it’s less commonly know that his uncle Sean O’Loughlin is also a rugby league legend, winning 34 caps for Great Britain between 1993 and 2009

He was not at first registered as a Farrell, but took mum Colleen’s family name of O’Loughlin. The couple married in 1995, changing Owen’s surname to Farrell the following year.

He revealed: "On the pitch, I struggle a lot with Owen Farrell. We just don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things,

“He hates me with a passion. Despite my earthy roots, he thinks I am a posh c***. He hates that. I bagged rugby league once jovially. I was saying it to take the piss kind of thing, ‘a bloody sport for the peasants’. He f**kin’ hated it."

The Scotland back-rower was the instigator in some tunnel argy-bargy when the players returned to the changing rooms after the warm-up back in 2018 with Farrell at the centre.

Footage of the incident shows all hell breaking loose when Farrell barged his way past a number of Scotland players to confront Wilson, who had been attempting to get inside the head of George Ford.

Wilson later revealed he was banned from Twickenham following the incident.

“I remember that game, I was actually injured and after tunnel-gate, after everything that happened in the tunnel against England, I’d lined up a corporate gig at Twickenham,” he recalled to Rugby Pass in November.

“Had it all lined up, a little bit of cash, all excited, only to get a message back saying the RFU have banned you from Twickenham Stadium after everything that happened the year before.

The pair have what we can only describe as a love-hate relationship. As legendary as the 'best mates' videos were during the 2016 tour of Australia, Farrell certainly didn't seem to be enjoying it.

Farrell and De Klerk ended up at arm’s length from each other in 2018 during their summer tour just before the 20-minute mark and the rest of the two sides quickly joined in.

The pair have since clashes on multiple occasions, including during the World Cup final a year later. Klerk is clearly someone who gets under the England skippers skin and their appears to be little love lost between the pair.

Speaking about the pair, Tom Curry said they are 'very different characters'.
