Rob Penney wants Crusaders to stay "grounded" ahead of Blues meeting

Historically, the Crusaders have had the upper hand in this rivalry. The Blues have lost 10 of their last 12 meetings with the Cantabrians, a run that has tilted the balance heavily in the Crusaders’ favour. Still, past results won’t count for much when the two sides meet again in Auckland.

The Blues enter the clash with plenty of motivation of their own. Their last-minute loss to the Brumbies will still sting, and returning home to Eden Park provides the perfect stage for a response. With pride, points and momentum all on the line, the contest shapes as an intense early-season battle.

Head coach Rob Penney said the group enjoyed the emotional boost from last week’s win before quickly shifting focus to the challenge ahead.

“Early in the week was awesome. It feels today like we’ve got our game face on again. One win doesn’t make a season, but the energy was great and everyone’s done a great job keeping things grounded as we look forward to heading up to Eden Park,” he says.

Team selection has generated plenty of interest, particularly with Taha Kemara named at fullback. After spending time training in the role over the past couple of seasons, Penney believes the young playmaker is well equipped for the challenge.

“He’s got all the attributes you need. He’s very fit, quick, great in the air and on the ground, and he’s got a strong kicking game. We’re really comfortable with him back there,” Penney says.

The locking combination of Antonio Shalfoon and Jamie Hannah continues after strong performances in Hamilton, highlighting the growing influence of the squad’s younger players.

“There are a lot of young men really starting to put their own stamp on the organisation. It’s pleasing for their confidence and belief, but also for the long-term benefits we’ll all get,” he says.

With the Blues known for their physical, power-based style, the Crusaders have opted for a 6–2 bench split to maintain forward intensity across the full 80 minutes.

“We know what’s coming, the Blues play a power game. The 6–2 split lets us manage the workloads of our back-five forwards and keeps the pack fresher through the 80,” says Penney.

Another storyline to watch could be the potential Crusaders debut of Canterbury lock Will Tucker, who has been named on the bench.

“He’s been awesome. It’ll be a proud moment for him and his family if the opportunity arises. He’s trained the house down, fitted in beautifully and is well respected,” Penney says.
