Red Roses coach John Mitchell joins Gallagher Prem club with with immediate effect

The vastly experienced coach will focus on improving tackle and collision effectiveness, helping to strengthen Gloucester’s defensive structures as part of their ongoing development.

Mitchell’s involvement is completely unpaid and not tied to any formal consultancy role. Instead, it’s an opportunity for the club’s young coaching team to learn directly from one of the sharpest defensive minds in the game.

A former All Blacks head coach and long-time defensive specialist, Mitchell played a key role in the Red Roses’ dominant World Cup campaign, bringing intensity and precision to their play — qualities Gloucester are eager to tap into.

The Cherry and Whites have thanked Mitchell for offering his time and expertise, describing his visit as a valuable period of learning and growth for the club’s staff and players alike.

A seasoned international coach with over three decades in the game, John Mitchell has led teams at the highest level across both hemispheres.

He served as head coach of New Zealand (2001–2003), England defence coach, Wasps director of rugby, and most recently guided England Women to the 2025 Rugby World Cup title.

Known for his meticulous defensive systems and leadership nous, Mitchell’s influence has been felt from Super Rugby to the Six Nations.
