PREM Rugby cult hero set to make debut for new club

The veteran back is set to start against Capibaras XV at CASI, replacing Jerónimo Ulloa in the lineup in one of the most notable selection calls from head coach Juan Manuel Leguizamón.

Cordero’s inclusion adds valuable experience and attacking flair to the Pampas side ahead of a crucial clash. Their opponents, Capibaras XV, arrive at the fixture with a perfect record and currently sit alone at the top of the standings, making the encounter one of the most anticipated matches of the round.

For many supporters, Cordero’s return to the field carries a strong sense of nostalgia. Known for his electric pace, elusive footwork and ability to produce moments of magic from anywhere on the pitch, he became a fan favourite during his years in Europe and a widely admired figure across the rugby world.

The 31-year-old back returns after more than four months out of action following a broken left ankle sustained while playing for his boyhood club, Regatas de Bella Vista, in the Buenos Aires Rugby Union (URBA) competition. His comeback marks an important milestone both personally and for Pampas as they look to strengthen their campaign.

Cordero’s rugby journey has been remarkable since he first burst onto the international scene. He made his Test debut for Argentina at just 19 years old in November 2013, facing England at Twickenham. Two years later he gained global recognition during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, dazzling audiences with his speed and stepping ability. Memorable tries against Georgia—where he was named Man of the Match—and Tonga helped Argentina reach an impressive fourth-place finish.

At club level, Cordero represented the Jaguares in Super Rugby before moving to Europe, where he made a major impact with Exeter Chiefs in England. His performances earned him the Premiership Player of the Month award in 2019 and a nomination for the Rugby Players’ Association Player of the Year. He later continued his career with Bordeaux in France and Connacht in Ireland.

Now back on South American soil, Cordero’s debut for Pampas promises excitement. With 18 tries in 56 caps for Los Pumas and a reputation as one of Argentina’s most entertaining players, his return could provide a spark at a pivotal moment early on in the competition.
