PREM Cup: Round 8 Recap - Archie McParland hat-trick bags Saints big win over Harlequins

Whilst England fans were left disgruntled by an underwhelming performance against Scotland, those who backed the likes of Northampton, Bath, Exeter and Leicester had their club allegiances on hand to brighten up their Valentines' weekend. Here's the latest recap from the PREM Rugby Cup.

A sensational hat-trick from Archie McParland inspired Northampton Saints to a stirring 40-24 comeback victory over Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop in Round 8 of the Prem Rugby Cup. Quins were electric early. Tom Lawday chased down a clever Max Green chip to open the scoring, Luke Yendle burrowed over from close range, and Cassius Cleaves finished slick handling out wide as the hosts stormed into a 19-0 lead inside half an hour.

Saints, however, found their rhythm just before the break. Anthony Belleau combined neatly with Toby Thame to send McParland over for his first, and the scrum-half added a dazzling second on the stroke of half-time after latching onto James Ramm’s break. Belleau’s conversion cut the deficit to 19-14 at the interval.

Cameron Anderson briefly steadied Quins early in the second half, but from there Saints took control. McParland was again central, slicing through to create Belleau’s try before Ollie Sleightholme’s clinical finish handed the visitors the lead. With Quins denied a late score by the TMO, Sam Graham’s surge set up McParland’s third, and a dominant Northampton scrum earned a penalty try at the death to seal an emphatic fourth Cup win of the campaign.

Exeter Chiefs ran in eight tries for the second successive week as they overwhelmed Gloucester Rugby 49-14 at Sandy Park to strengthen their grip on Pool A in the Prem Rugby Cup. The hosts struck early when Harvey Skinner’s clever chip released Campbell Ridl for the opener, but Gloucester responded sharply.

Max Knight chased down a bouncing ball to level matters before Matias Alemanno charged down a clearance and scored to give the visitors a 14-7 lead. Zack Wimbush’s powerful close-range finish ensured the sides went into the break locked at 14-14.

From there, Exeter blew the game apart. Will Goodrick-Clarke muscled over within minutes of the restart, and Ridl soon took centre stage. The winger combined smartly with Ollie Batson for his second before shrugging off defenders to complete back-to-back Cup hat-tricks.

Captain Ethan Roots added his name to the scoresheet with a surging run, sparking a rapid burst that also saw Wimbush claim his second and Paul Brown-Bampoe finish clinically in the corner. Gloucester were unable to respond in the final quarter, leaving Exeter celebrating a commanding bonus-point victory that keeps their play-off ambitions firmly on track.

Bath Rugby came from behind to claim a 33-24 victory over Bristol Bears in a lively West Country derby at a packed Rec in Round 8 of the Prem Rugby Cup. Bristol started strongly with Max Pepper and Gabriel Ibitoye scoring early, supported by Sam Worsley’s boot to lead 17-14 at halftime.

However, Bath hit back after the break with a quickfire double from Charlie Griffin and additional tries from Arthur Green, Randall, and George Timmins, ultimately securing the bonus-point win.

Bristol showed flashes of attacking intent, with Joe Jenkins making a key impact on his first start since October, but Bath’s composure under pressure and clinical finishing proved decisive. The visitors’ efforts late in the game were thwarted by strong Bath defence and a yellow card to George Taylor, leaving the hosts with a hard-earned win in front of their home crowd.

Leicester Tigers snatched a dramatic 31-26 victory over Saracens at StoneX Stadium in Round 8 of the Prem Rugby Cup. Saracens had raced to a 21-12 lead at halftime with tries from Alex Lozowski, Tayo Adegbemile, and Rotimi Segun, but the Tigers fought back in the second half.

Leicester’s maul proved decisive, with Tommy Reffell and Finn Theobald-Thomas crossing to close the gap, before Ollie Allan gave the visitors the lead. Saracens briefly regained the advantage through Segun’s second try, but two late yellow cards left them defending with 13 men. The Tigers drove over from a maul in the 78th minute, with Bailey’s conversion sealing a last-gasp win.

Saracens showed attacking flair and athleticism throughout, but Leicester’s control of possession, discipline in the maul, and clinical finishing under pressure ultimately proved decisive, leaving Saracens’ progression hopes hanging by a thread.
