"No clearer" - 5 England Players With Uncertain Premiership Club Futures

Each of these players have not yet confirmed their futures at their current clubs, and have had plenty of interest from rival sides and those from overseas.

Here are five England stars who have not yet confirmed their futures in the Premiership.

There is speculation that Jack Nowell is to become the latest departure from Sandy Park, as the mass player exodus is causing shockwaves across Devon. With the Chiefs in a financially difficult position with the latest enforced salary cap, they have been forced to welcome bidding offers for their top stars.

Five first team stars are already expected to leave, with Luke Cowan-Dickie, Harry Williams and Sam Simmonds all set for Montpellier in France's Top 14, whilst Dave Ewers makes a move to Ulster, and Joe Simmonds heads to Pau. Nowell has spoken publicly about his intentions to stay, and would prefer a move to Japan or France, over another Premiership club.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Nowell said:

“I want to stay at Exeter, but I’m out of contract, there’s stuff going on with the salary cap and I’ve got a growing family. And I’ll be 30 after the World Cup. I’m in talks with the club at the moment; ideally I’d stay but I’m not too sure what’s going on. The first thing for me is my family.

“My only option if I’m in England is to stay (at Exeter Chiefs). France, Japan… I went out to Japan for the World Cup, it was an amazing country. I’d like to give Japan a go over France but, obviously, anything could happen."

England's powerhouse centre is lining up a potential move to France, as the Premiership's salary cap limitations are halting Sale from resigning Manu Tuilagi. After arriving from Leicester Tigers on a one-year contract in July 2020, Tuilagi agreed a contract extension the following year, yet his time at the AJ Bell is looking to come to an end.

Tuilagi is linked with a move to Racing 92, after having one last crack at the Rugby World Cup with England. The Rugby Paper reports how Tuilagi is interested in a move to Paris, yet has also received interest from Toulouse and Toulon. Racing 92 offered Tuilagi a staggering £830,000 salary back in 2019, with former England Head Coach Eddie Jones stopping the move, to keep Tuilagi in England ahead of that year's Rugby World Cup.

The Top 14 will undergo a bidding war for the 31-year-old come the end of the season, with Racing 92 the favourites for the signature.

Courtney Lawes may be set to join his Northampton Saints teammates Dan Biggar and David Ribbans, with a move to Toulon in the Top 14. Lawes has admitted that he is unsure about his future at Franklins Gardens, and has previously spoken about a potential move away from the club.

Wales International Dan Biggar headed to Toulon in November, with Ribbans' move far more recently announced. The reports were only announced today that the England and Saints lock would follow Biggar across to France. Lawes' future is not yet confirmed, with the British and Irish Lion having previously said;

"My contract is not necessarily up this year, there’s options there,’ he said. ‘At the end of the day, I’ve got to do what’s best for myself and my family.

"‘I’d love to stay at Saints, at the same time you’ve got to find what’s best for yourself and your family, like Dan Biggar has done.

"‘That’s the most important thing, especially when you’re getting a bit older. I think I’ll probably get one more contract out of myself, then call it a day at the end of that."

The Billy Vunipola transfer saga continues, with the number eight's future as yet unconfirmed at the Stone X Stadium. A mainstay at Saracens since arriving in 2013, Vunipola has achieved great hights with the club, winning four Premiership titles, and three Champions Cup titles.

Reports of Vunipola's exit began with links to France fulling the rumour mill. However, the 30-year-old added more options to his possible exit, speaking with former Scotland international Jim Hamilton, on the Big Jim Show podcast. Vunipola highlighted how a move to Japan, or even Super Rugby could be on the cards.

"I’ll be in a better position to make a call on… if teams look at me and think ‘He can actually help our team’ instead of being a hindrance or not being that good.

“In terms of experiencing France, Japan or Super Rugby [I’m interested]. My wife’s Australian. It’s definitely something that I’ve thought about before but I’ve never done. I mean I’m thirty now. Now would be the right time to pull the trigger on something like that.”

Anthony Watson signed a 'short-term deal' with Leicester Tigers, after the Midlander's won the race for Watson in April of last year. Departing Bath after nine years and over 100 caps at the Somerset club, Watson has been settling into Leicester life, and returned from injury to make his debut in a pre-season friendly against Jersey.

Watson was then fast-tracked back into the England team, with former Tigers Head Coach Steve Borthwick now taking the reigns at Twickenham. Watson is yet to sign a further contract extension at Welford Road, with Leicester fans hopeful to see the winger re-sign ahead of the 2023/24 season.

There have been no solidified bids for Watson, and he has not expressed interest to depart the club. However, a big money move is always on the cards for a player of Watson's calibre, and with his contract up before too long, the offers may soon start arriving for his services.
