Newcastle Red Bulls signing CANCELLED with immediate effect

Nasova had previously agreed terms to move to Newcastle ahead of next season. However, following discussions and a review of the circumstances, the club has agreed to allow the Fijian international to remain with his current side, Fijian Drua.

Newcastle Red Bulls said the decision followed constructive discussions involving the player, Fijian Drua and the Fiji Rugby Players Association.

General Manager of Rugby Neil McIlroy said: “While we were very much looking forward to welcoming Joji to Newcastle Red Bulls, we fully understand and respect the unique personal circumstances that have led to this decision.

“Contractual certainty is vital for clubs, players and the wider game. But at the same time rugby is built on people, families and communities, and we believe our responsibility as an employer extends beyond the field.

“We wish Joji, his family and the Fijian Drua every success for the future.”

The announcement follows speculation in May surrounding another of Newcastle Red Bulls' high-profile signings, with reports suggesting the arrival of winger Fehi Fineanganofo could also be in doubt after New Zealand Rugby reportedly made a late push to keep him in the country.

The Hurricanes flyer has enjoyed a remarkable Super Rugby campaign, scoring 17 tries, including two hat-tricks and a four-try haul against the Brumbies. His tally broke the competition's single-season try-scoring record, matching the marks previously set by Joe Roff and Ben Lam.

Newcastle confirmed the signing of the 23-year-old in January, with Fineanganofo agreeing to a two-year deal as part of the club's recruitment drive following Red Bull's takeover last summer.
