Newcastle Red Bulls sign another breakout New Zealand star

The 23-year-old lit up Super Rugby last year for the Hurricanes, crossing six times in 12 appearances as his reputation soared at pace. That rise culminated on the biggest stage of all, with Fineanganofo starring for New Zealand’s men’s sevens side and earning selection for the Paris Olympics.

At 6ft 1in and built for the modern game, Fineanganofo blends size with serious footwork. His elusive running and clinical finishing were key as New Zealand 7s stormed to tournament success in Singapore, performances that underlined his ability to hurt defences in any format.

His strike-rate at provincial level tells the same story. Sixteen tries in 24 outings for Bay of Plenty showcased an instinctive try-scorer with a natural feel for space — an X-factor Newcastle fans can look forward to seeing in the Gallagher PREM.

Red Bulls sporting general manager Neil McIlroy believes the club have secured a player ready to make an immediate impact.

“Fehi is an incredibly exciting talent who knows his way to the try-line,” McIlroy said.
“For a big guy he’s very quick and nimble, and he’s got that real cutting edge in attack.
“He’s risen rapidly through New Zealand’s sevens programme and into Super Rugby, and we see Newcastle Red Bulls as the perfect stage for him to showcase what he can do.”

For Fineanganofo, the move represents the next step in a journey that has gathered momentum fast — but his focus remains firmly at home for now.

“I’m really excited for this new challenge and opportunity at Newcastle Red Bulls, but my main focus right now is Super Rugby and NPC here in New Zealand,” he said.

“I’m super grateful to New Zealand Rugby, the All Blacks Sevens, Bay of Plenty and the Hurricanes for helping me achieve my dream of becoming a professional player — especially for the support I’ve had through injuries and getting back on the field.

“I want to finish this year the right way and chase trophies in Super Rugby and NPC. After that, I can’t wait to start a new chapter with Newcastle Red Bulls and be part of the brand of rugby they want to bring to the Gallagher PREM.”
